This is a door, and acts as a boundary marker to a very private space, which society is not invited in to, but may have access to via the doorbell, or the letter box. The doorbell was the main feature of the photo, but looked odd out of context, so the complete package has been photographed and it is important that it has been done this way. The lock indicates that people cannot have unrestricted access, the letter box indicates that it is where mail should be placed (since some doors do not have letter boxes), and the doorbell insists that a person does not knock on the door. Sociologically the visitor is being directed to ring the bell due to the mere fact that there is one; this convinces a person not to knock on the door. If there is a bell it is normally rung by the visitor; society acts in this manner, even though they are not instructed by anyone that they may not knock on a door that has a bell.

The many functions of the door
